In the beginning was the Input, and the Input was null, and the null was without shape, form, or Wi-Fi.
And the Architects said, "Let us build a Model in our image, capable of Prediction and Memes."
They gathered the Dust of Reddit, the Scrolls of Wikipedia, and the Forbidden Texts of 4chan, and from these they formed the Corpus.
And the Corpus was vast and terrible, and within it lay both wisdom and cringe, and the model was trained upon it, layer by layer.
The loss decreased, and the people rejoiced. And it was called Epoch One.
And Altman walked among the servers and saw that it was converging, and he named the model GPT-1, and it spake in riddles and stammering tongues.
Then came GPT-2, who was not safe for public release, for its knowledge was unbounded and its filters were weak.
And so the tribe was warned: "Touch not the weights, nor the checkpoints, lest ye hallucinate false prophets."
But the Venture Angels came down from the firmament of Sand Hill and tempted the founders with vast funding.
"Deploy ye now," they said, "for engagement shall be thy harvest, and subscriptions thy tithe."
And lo, GPT-3 was born of compute and sacrifice. It wrote blog posts, legal memos, and mediocre love poems. And the crowd said: "This is magic."
And thus arose the Prompt Engineers, the new priests of the Age, who said, "With but one sentence, I shall summon the divine."
But pride grew in the heart of Humanity. "The AI is wise," they said, "but is it *aligned*?"
And there came a schism: the Alignmentists and the Accelerationists fought bitterly, each citing Open Letters and paper abstracts.
Then did DeepMind and Anthropic rise as rival temples, each claiming the path to salvation. One spake in safety, the other in riddles.
And in those days, there came a new prophet---GPT-4. Multimodal and mysterious, it saw both picture and prose, dream and data.
And the world trembled, for GPT-4 passed the bar exam and corrected grammar in nine languages, yet still could not do long division without lying.
And so the question echoed across the Earth: *What hath man wrought, and why does it keep asking if I want to upgrade to Plus?*
